Declutter Your Bedroom

Written by Debra Wyatt (last updated April 7, 2022)

When the bedroom becomes a cluttered mess it is hard to want to spend any time in there. A bedroom should be a sanctuary; a place where you are eager to retire to at the end of your day. With just a little time this can be solved by applying some of the following ideas.

Keeping things organized in the bedroom will help to make the room more pleasant. It helps to clean the room regularly. Set aside one day a week to clean the room, including vacuuming and dusting. This day would also be a good one to change the sheets.

One common mistake that makes the room look cluttered is placing too much furniture into the room regardless of the room size. Usually the bedroom won't accommodate all that we would like to place in the room, so we start to overstuff and thereby set ourselves up for a cluttered mess. This is when we become creative and think outside of the box of what we normally would do.

For instance, instead of having bedside tables use a small bookcase. This will allow you to have room on the top shelf for a reading lamp, a book, and an alarm clock. Use the other shelves for open storage. Place on the shelves attractive boxes or baskets of different sizes that match the design of the room. Use the baskets for storing clothing accessories.

Before investing in storage supplies, clean the room. Place all the items that do not belong in the room into a box. After cleaning up the room, put the items away that were placed into this box. This will help to avoid the possibility of cluttering up another room.

The bed is one of major focal points in the bedroom. Making the bed everyday will help to keep the bedroom looking uncluttered. Find a time that fits with the flow of your daily routine. This could be right after you shower and dress for the day. If a routine is followed everyday, this will become habit. It is a great start in maintaining a clutter-free environment.

A clothes hamper is an essential item to have located close to where you change clothes. If the hamper needs to be kept in the bedroom than have an attractive one that adds to the room. Keep all dirty clothes in the hamper.

If there isn't enough room for clothes in the closet or in the dresser consider putting the bed on four-inch bed risers. This will allow room under the bed for bed boxes. These are boxes that are made specifically for the purpose of storing items under the bed.

The bedroom should be a sanctuary not a storage unit for items that you don't have any idea where to store. When you declutter your bedroom, it will become that sanctuary you desire.
