Using Boxes to Organize Your Clutter

Written by Doris Donnerman (last updated June 3, 2021)

Boxes are among the greatest asset that a person can use when trying to organize or remove clutter within their homes. There are usually a couple of small problems that arise when using boxes to help organize clutter. Those problems can typically be narrowed down to two pretty general questions, which are how best to use the boxes, and what to do with the boxes when an individual is finished with them? Believe it or not the answers to these two questions are going to ensure that you have utilized these excellent storage devices. Here are just a few of the possible answers that you can use to answer those questions.

As you are getting ready to use any boxes for organization, there are a few words of advice to think about. Keep in mind that different types of boxes can be used to organize your clutter, and as such there are going to be different types of challenges presented. With a little creativity and forethought, those challenges are not going to be a problem, but can actually be a help.

  • Use. When you are getting ready to store any item, whether it is for storage purposes or for moving, take a look at the item, or items, that you are going to be storing. The type of item is going to necessitate the type of cardboard box that you use. For example, if you are going to be storing things like posters, artwork, or anything that can be rolled up, and you do not want to have a hodgepodge collection of different sized containers, then try to use those partitioned boxes that liquor and wine bottles come in. These types of boxes are also really great for storing, or even organizing large numbers of shoes. There are times when you are going to need to store, move, or even possibly organize larger items. Such items may include things like gardening tools. In such circumstances a cardboard box can help you out as well. All that you need to do is to cut the bottoms off of two boxes and stack them on top of a third box. Use some duct tape to hold the parts together, and you are going to be able to store and organize your gardening tools.
  • Storage. Do you want to save some boxes for your next big move? That can be a great idea, unfortunately there is a slight problem with this. That problem is that cardboards boxes can be large and unwieldy. There is a surprisingly easy solution to this question however. All that you really need to do is break down the boxes, stack them flat and store them in an out-of-the-way place. Such places can be your attic, garage, or some other storage space. In order to maximize your storage space, especially if you are trying to maintain a large number of boxes, one of the ways that you can do this is to use another large cardboard box, or twine or string to hold them together.
