Organized Picture Groupings

Written by Debra Wyatt (last updated November 3, 2020)

A picture on a wall tells others a lot about you. Is the wall full of pictures from family to hobbies or different travel experiences? Pictures on the wall can and does tell a story. Too many pictures can be overwhelming to look at if the pictures are just put together with no thought to the arrangement. If the pictures aren't hang will, it will just make the wall look cluttered. A great way to avoid this clutter is by organizing your pictures. This really isn't as hard as it sounds. The little bit of time that you invest will leave you feeling more satisfied with the look of your home.

One method that you can use to begin organizing your pictures, and to avoid excess nail holes, is to take the pictures and group them so that the pictures that you like best are put together. Do this on the floor, so that you can practice arranging the photos into an attractive grouping.

Thinking of your pictures, can they be made into several groupings? Taking one of the groupings and create a geometric shape. It could be any type of shape like a circle; rectangle or a triangle. If the triangle or rectangle shape was chosen then form a line with the pictures. That line could be either vertical or horizontal.

For the rectangle shape place three or more pictures under each other and then three or more pictures being placed side by side. Keep placing the pictures this way until the design is created the way you want. If you don't then the pictures will look disjointed. Most anything can make up a grouping and be attractive as long. Just remember that the space between the pictures doesn't need to be equal just that the intervening space should be small.

When placing the groupings on the wall they shouldn't by dwarfed by the furnishing or so large that the picture or groupings are overpowered. This can be avoided by placing the larger or heavier items toward the center of the grouping. Then with the smaller items place them on the sides balancing the grouping.

Dark mats, elaborate frames along with oil paintings give always make the pictures look heavier than items such as water colors, etchings or drawings. So, one would want to keep the weight of the groupings well distributed. A grouping can have large and small rectangles along with circles as long as the various shapes and sizes are mingled which would maximize the visual interest.

If where you are hanging the pictures where a lamp, plant, or vase will be part of the arrangement, then you will want to be sure to have them included in the plans for the picture wall. Now the grouping is ready to be hanged, so place the arrangement together. Remember that if there is too much space between the pictures it will disrupt the graphic effect of the pictures. This means that what you are trying to say with the pictures will most likely be lost.
