Home and Office PC Storage

Written by Karen Bates (last updated September 5, 2019)

If you own a PC, there may come a time when you need to store it away for a while. There are various reasons why you may need to do this, but if you find that you need to put your computer away for a while, it is important to store it correctly to ensure that it will work correctly in the future when you need it again.

If you need to store your PC for a while, there are a few things you should consider before unplugging the computer and shoving it in the back of a closet. For best results, you will need to prepare the PC for storage and then store it in the proper manner. This means cleaning the computer and packing it away so that it will not be damaged by dust, moisture, or other things during its time in storage.

If you still have the PC's original packaging, this is the best way to store your computer for a long period of time. The protective packaging can help keep your computer safe and will fit the various parts of your PC perfectly, ensuring the best possible protection. If you no longer have the packaging, however, there are other ways to store your PC. Try using an old sheet or blanket to cover the computer, or place it in a cardboard box with static-free bubble wrap to protect the device and prevent dusty build-up.

Before you store away your PC, clean out its various components and accessories. You can use dust remover or a cloth to get rid of dust, then wipe off the machine to free it of dirt. Pack away cords and accessories in an organized fashion, using small boxes or bags with labels to help you find the parts again later.

Store the PC and its accessories in a dry place where they will have little exposure to moisture, dust, or extreme temperatures. Place the PC on a shelf or pallet so it will be up off the floor and will be less likely to get damaged.

By properly storing your PC, you can help ensure that it will work correctly when you need to use it again in the future. Cords and other accessories will also be kept in good condition and will be easy to find when put away in a safe and organized manner. Remember before storing your PC to back-up any file information that you don't want to lose.
