Keeping Your Kitchen Gadgets Organized

Organizing Your Fridge

Summary: Fridges can get really scary if you don't stay on top of what's in there. Try to think about what you want to store and how it should be stored and you're on your way to a clean refrigerator!

When it comes to organizing your fridge, there are a few options you have. One consideration is that you want everything as visible as possible so that you know you have what it is you have. My suggestion is that you use clear containers and bags for the things you have to store in your refrigerator. Have a place where you keep the meat and only the meat. It is a terrible idea to have meat with fruit, because the fruit can be contaminated and make you very sick if it is not cooked very well before you eat it.

Also, have a place where you can keep your fruits and vegetables. If you are prone to forgetting that your produce is there for you to use, I suggest using a fruit bowl on one of the shelves. Many fridges come with a drawer or two for fruits and vegetables. If they are clear enough to see through, you can use them for your fruits and vegetables, but if you use them, be sure to put the softest fruits up on top of the heavier, harder fruits.

Try to have your fridge somewhat empty, since an overfull refrigerator can keep the cold air from circulating and cause your produce, meat, and other foods to go bad earlier than expected and/or to grow some pretty nasty stuff.

If you can, have your condiments restricted to one area of the fridge, such as inside the door of the refrigerator. That way, they are out of the way and not scattered willy-nilly all over your fridge. Keep heavy things on the bottom shelf so that the weight of these items does not damage or even break the shelves of your unit. Try to keep your leftovers in disposable containers if you tend to forget about them and get squeamish about cleaning a container of rotting food out. Even better, do not put leftovers in the fridge at all if you tend to not eat them. It is better to throw it away today than gag on cleaning it out next week...or a few weeks after that.
