Video Storage

Summary: Whether you are a professional videographer or simply a person who is interested in making your own videos, video storage can be a vital necessity. Luckily, as with most things in life, technology can help make video storage a snap. Here's how.

Everyone loves to make videos, buy videos, or even watch videos. After all, these are great ways to keep track of our favorite events, as well as review some of our favorite movies. Unfortunately, video storage can take up a whole lot of room until recently. With recent advances in technology, it is becoming easier than ever to store our favorite videos.

  • Tapes. Regardless of what we would like to think, video tapes are still very much in use today. While they are great for filming, storing them is a different matter. When you are storing your tapes make sure that they are stored on their spine, and not flat. Much like a book, this can actually damage the tape inside the cassettes. In addition, you should be very careful about having any magnetic devices near tapes since the magnetic field can erase what is on the cassettes.
  • DVDs. Gone are the days when you could go to your local video store, and pick up a video tape to watch. In the home video market, DVDs have long since replaced the video tape. With the creation of easy to use home DVD recorders, it won't be long before you see more and more video cameras that only work on DVDs. When storing your DVDs be sure that you again store them on the spine, and not flat. DVDs are easily scratched, which seriously degrades the quality of the videos.
  • Computer. The memory capacity of home computers is becoming larger and larger as time goes by, and what better place to store your videos? There are all kinds of video formats that are useable on computers now, and with your computer acting as the primary storage unit for your videos, it takes only a couple of minutes to burn a video to a DVD if you wish to watch it on a television. Best of all when you use a computer to help store your videos, you will know exactly what videos you have. When the videos were made. How long the videos are. All of which can be done by simply pressing a few buttons.
  • Back up everything. Regardless of what medium you use to store your videos, you should always have a back up system. For example, if you have video tapes you should copy everything to a DVD format, as well as having a digital copy on your computer. If you are using only DVDs, then you should at the very least have another digital copy somewhere.
