Ways to Better Organize Your Linens

Summary: Linen closets are typically high among the areas of the home that typically need the most help in the area of organization. Here is a strategy guide for you to use the next time you attempt to organize your linens.

There is really no place in the home that needs as much help in getting organized as the linen closet. Often, in many homes, a linen closet is just that—a closet. However, there are times and places where a linen closet is just a place to store your linen items. It might be anything that could be used as a storage site such as a shelf, a dresser, or even a basket or a chest. It does not matter what you use as the storage system or receptacle for your linens, it is going to be necessary to organize it in some way. That being said, here are some tips and ideas on how to do just that.

  • Prepare. Begin by totally removing all of your linen items from your proposed storage locations. I use the word locations because there is no rule that says you have to use only one storage site. You can use as many locations as necessary, and I would suggest using one for each floor of your home. After finding as many locations as you need, make sure that it is cleaned thoroughly—it would not do to store linens in a location that is going to end up making them dirty.
  • Separate. Separate all of your linens from each other. Pillow cases, towels, blankets, sheets and so forth. Pile each category separately in one central location. You can use as many subcategories as you wish—color, size, and more—as long as you have each pile organized in a manner that is going to be able to help you out.
  • Consider. You should consider where you are going to store your linens. You could store a few sets of bed linens in each separate bedroom. If you have more than one bathroom, try storing only the number of towels and washcloths that you need in each. You should also consider whether you have too many linens. If you do then try to donate or get rid of the excess in some way.
  • Implement. Once you have determined how and where you are going to store your linens be sure that you actually follow through with your plan. What this means is that you not only initially set up your system, but that you follow through with it as well. Maintain your system, otherwise it does you absolutely no good, and you are going to be right back where you started—a disorganized mess that is out of control.
